What Is Netball?

Netball,

c’est quoi?

Netball is an exciting, fast, and skilful game of fair contest, in which two teams of seven players each strive to keep or gain possession of the ball, before shooting a goal. It is played in approximately 115 countries by over 20 million participants.

Games are played on a rectangular court divided into thirds, with a raised goal at each end. The team with the ball, through running, jumping, throwing, and catching, attempts to move the ball into its goal circle, from where a goal may be scored, while the opposing team uses defensive movements and strategies to prevent them from scoring and to gain possession. The team with the higher number of goals at the end of the match, wins.

Players have specified areas in which they are allowed, according to their position – Goal Shooter (GS), Goal Attack (GA), Wing Attack (WA), Centre (C), Wing Defence (WD), Goal Defence (GD) or Goal Keeper (GK).

The game starts with a pass from the centre circle. Whenever a team scores a goal, the ball goes back to the centre for the next centre pass. Only two players from each team can shoot goals – the GS and the GA. The aim is to score more goals than the other team. If you do, you win!

You can’t bounce or run with the ball, and when you get the ball, you have to throw or shoot it within 3 seconds. When you are defending, you must stay 3 ft (0.9m) away from the player with the ball, and you can’t touch another player if they’re holding the ball.

A game of Netball has four quarters of 15 minutes, with quarter and half-time breaks. Two umpires control the game and ensure that it is played within the Rules of Netball, as outlined by World Netball.

The Rules of Netball are available to download in both French and English from World Netball, or you can download the official Rules of Netball App from the App & Google Play stores.
